TV News: representation and bias


1) Whose perspective have Sky News used to present the story? (Clue: it’s in the opening line)
The perspective  that Sky News have used is that it has supported the police officers and not the young people.

 2) How are the police represented in this coverage?

The police are represented in favour for the action they have done and unrepresentative to the innocent man who had been killed. The shows that news presented was given in biased perspective being in favour for the police. Also the whole video was shown about the police.

3) How are young people represented in this coverage?
In the news programme young people are shown to be a disrespect and they are shown to be a minority group which are not helping society.

 4) What images and videos are selected by Sky News to accompany the story?

Sky news uses footage of the actual riots of a birds eye view showing the riots to accompany the story. Furthermore they use citizen journalism to report the riot at the beginning.

 5) What choice of words is used to present this news event?
The words that are used to presents are biased towards the young people by the choice of language which was used cleverly.


 6) What aspect of the story is chosen as the most important detail and included at the very beginning of the report?
The amount of loot that happened was the most important detail that happened which was mention at the start of the programme.


 7) How is narrative used to engage the audience with this news story?
The narrative was able to engage the story through the way of the programme.


 8) How can we apply Todorov’s equilibrium theory to this coverage?
We can show the Todorovs theory of equilibrium to the story through this. Tottenham fans start riot. Then police officers come to save the day and everything goes back to normal.

It has been given from different angles such as its shown from the police officers views and the young people views and the political view as well.
